Event Preview

Llanberis, Wales – With just 10 weeks to go until the 48th edition of the International Snowdon Race / Ras Rhyngwladol yr Wyddfa sponsored by Castell Howell on Saturday 19th July, mountain runners from across Europe are getting ready to descend on Llanberis, Wales, for one of the greatest sporting events on the Welsh calendar which can trace it beginnings back to 1976.

As we move towards the 50th year of the Snowdon International which is considered one of the greatest in the world of mountain running, anticipation for this year’s event is once again high. 2025 race entries are now full with 450 general places taken. An additional 40 international runners will also toe the line in Cae Ddol in July.

That international flavour can be expected across the weekend as runners from Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Italy and the Republic of Ireland go head-to-head for the race victory and rub shoulders with club runners and those just hoping to complete the 10 arduous miles of this famous mountain in the heart of the Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri National Park.

The event welcomes back Castell Howell as headline partner once again this year (last time) along with support from SCOTT Sports, Pete Bland Sports, Snowdon Mountain Railway, the Royal Victoria Hotel, S4C, Cwmni Da, Community Centre, St Padarn Church, Welsh Athletics, Frwythau Oren Fruits, Sports Pictures Cymru, Cyngor Gwynedd Council, Always Aim High Events, and Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri National Park. Aberglaslyn Search and Rescue Team will also be on the mountain keeping the runners safe throughout the race, plus St Johns Ambulance.

The race will once again be televised on terrestrial TV via S4C and also be available on the BBC iPlayer, with the programme produced by North Wales-based production company Cwmni Da. We are in discusison of having a live feed of the race on the ‘Race Youtube channel (tbc)

Other features of the day will be the traditional junior races starting ten minutes after the main race at 2.10pm on the Saturday for 10-18 years, once again supported by the Eryri National Park and will be organised by the Byw Iach, Cyngor Gwynedd team. Registration for these races will take place from 9.30am-1.30pm at the Llanberis community centre.

Race organiser Stephen Edwards takes charge of his 15th event in 2025, and states:

“The buzz in Llanberis come race weekend is unbelievable, you really do have to be here to be able to understand that. This race means so much to the area and the people of Llanberis. To think what it has become all those years after that very first humble race back in 1976 – it’s incredible really. But we have to be realistic the event industry is changing”

“We are welcoming a reduced number of runners in 2025, as we cap the race at x 450 general entries. The primary reason for this is out of respects for runners on race day, as the mountain becomes busier every year, also as a repsect for Y Wyddfa. We are aware of footpath erosion on the Llanberis path and so on that the number of other events on Yr Wyddfa bring each year. We felt as a local organised race we have to respect the mountain and cap the numbers, will others follow!!!”

“My heart-felt thanks go to the Snowdon Race team and Llanberis community who are incredibly hard-working and supportive to me as race organiser. And that’s what makes this race so magical – it’s an international event, organised by a local team, with a local feel/ support and long may that continue.”
